Configuration overwrite

A change that replaces trusted device settings with malicious or altered ones.

Configuration overwrite is a change that replaces trusted device settings with malicious or altered ones. Instead of stealing a password or breaking code, an attacker targets the stored configuration that tells a router, firewall, server, or application how to behave. If those settings are replaced, the device may start forwarding traffic differently, expose services, weaken access controls, or send data to attacker-controlled systems.

This matters because configuration is often the real security boundary on network gear and infrastructure. A successful overwrite can create persistence, hide malicious routes, disable logging, or lock out administrators even after the original entry point is fixed. Defenders look for unexpected diffs, new admin accounts, changed startup files, altered DNS or routing entries, and any mismatch against a trusted baseline. Protecting against overwrite requires strong authentication, least-privilege management access, secure backups, integrity checks, and rapid review after patching or intrusion alerts.
