Configuration directive

A setting that controls how software behaves, often in a server configuration file.

A configuration directive is a named setting that tells software how to behave. In a server such as NGINX, directives in configuration files can control features, request handling, and which processing paths are enabled.

Directives matter in cybersecurity because a flaw may be reachable only when particular settings or combinations are present. Attackers may target exposed behavior, while defenders review configurations to assess whether a vulnerability applies, reduce unnecessary exposure, and verify mitigations. For an NGINX security advisory, checking the product and version is not always enough: administrators may also need to compare the active configuration with the vendor’s guidance before deciding whether a system is affected.
