Configuration analysis

Review of settings and files that can reveal how a system is deployed or connected.

Configuration analysis is the review of settings and files that describe how software or a system is deployed, configured, and connected to other services. These may include server addresses, API endpoints, domain names, feature flags, and authentication settings.

In cyber security, configuration analysis helps defenders understand system behavior, identify exposed or unsafe settings, and investigate suspicious connections. During analysis of a phishing kit, for example, configuration files may reveal where a deployed fake-login page sends data or which infrastructure it contacts. Such findings can help map the kit’s operation, but do not by themselves prove who controls the infrastructure or that victims were affected. Defenders should protect configuration files from unauthorized access and avoid sharing secrets they may contain.
