Conditional activation

A design where malicious functions run only after a specific trigger is met.

Conditional activation is a malware design pattern in which malicious code stays dormant until a specific trigger occurs. The trigger can be a website visit, a time check, a locale, a process name, a user action, or another environmental cue. Until that condition is met, the sample may appear harmless or inactive.

This matters because it helps attackers evade sandboxes, static scanning, and simple beacon-based detection. If an analyst opens a file in an isolated lab that does not reproduce the real trigger, the payload may never reveal its behavior. Defenders look for correlations between user activity and later network or process changes, and they use browser telemetry, endpoint monitoring, and behavior-based analysis to catch the switch from idle to active. Conditional activation is common in banking trojans, loaders, and stealthy droppers.
