Conditional Access for workload identities

Policy controls for non-human identities such as service principals and app registrations.

Conditional Access for workload identities is an identity policy feature that applies controls to non-human accounts, such as service principals, app registrations, and other application identities. Instead of judging only user logins, it evaluates how a workload authenticates and whether that sign-in should be allowed under current policy.

This matters because attackers often target application credentials, client secrets, certificates, or stolen tokens. If a workload identity has broad permissions, reusing those credentials can let an intruder call cloud APIs, read data, or move deeper into an environment without touching a user account. Conditional Access for workload identities helps defenders reduce that risk by restricting which identities may authenticate, from where they may connect, and under what conditions their tokens are accepted. In practice, it is strongest when paired with tight app permissions, secret rotation, token revocation, and sign-in monitoring during incident response.
