Compromise scope

the real extent of any affected systems or data.

Compromise scope is the real extent of an incident: which systems, accounts, endpoints, cloud resources, or data were actually affected. It is broader than a headline or victim listing, because a public claim may describe an attack attempt, a leak, or a coercive post without proving what was truly accessed or encrypted.

In cyber security, scope matters because it determines response priority, containment steps, legal reporting, and recovery effort. Defenders use logs, endpoint telemetry, identity events, backups, and data-loss evidence to separate rumor from confirmed impact. In ransomware cases, a posted victim name does not by itself establish compromise scope; teams still need to verify whether data was exfiltrated, services were disrupted, or the attacker only had limited access. Clear scope assessment prevents overreaction, but it also helps avoid missing a real breach.
