A material is compostable when it can break down under defined composting conditions and within specified limits. The term does not mean it will decompose quickly in any environment: temperature, moisture, microbes, and processing time all matter. Compostable is also distinct from biobased, which describes a material’s source, and biodegradable, a broader claim about breaking down.
For materials such as PLA filament, a compostability claim does not guarantee acceptance in a home compost bin or local waste system. Some products require specific industrial composting conditions, and collection and sorting rules vary. Check the product’s certification and local facility guidance before disposal; otherwise, a compostable label may not match the material’s actual end-of-life route.
