A composite index is a score built by combining several evaluations into one number. Instead of relying on a single benchmark or test, it aggregates multiple measurements, often with weights, to give a broader comparison across systems.
In cyber security, composite indexes matter because they can simplify risk or performance review, but they can also hide weaknesses. A model, tool, or platform may score well overall while failing on a specific security-relevant area such as data handling, resistance to prompt injection, or operational controls. Defenders use composite scoring to compare vendors, prioritize hardening, and track posture over time. Attackers may exploit overreliance on the headline number, knowing that one strong average can mask a fragile deployment. For that reason, a composite index should guide analysis, not replace testing of the exact environment.
