Composable infrastructure

A model that pools compute, storage, and networking resources for software-driven allocation.

Composable infrastructure is an IT model that pools compute, storage, and networking into shared resource pools that software can allocate on demand. Instead of treating each server or array as a fixed unit, administrators use a management layer to assemble and reassemble infrastructure into workloads, test environments, or services as needed. This makes provisioning faster and more flexible, especially in large data centers and private clouds.

From a security perspective, the model raises the value of the control plane. If an attacker compromises the orchestration software or its APIs, they may be able to change configurations, redirect resources, weaken segmentation, or disrupt many systems at once. Defenders therefore focus on hardening the management interface, restricting admin access, patching quickly, and auditing changes. In practice, composable infrastructure appears in both attack paths and defenses: attackers target the software that controls the fleet, while defenders use the same automation to enforce policy, isolate workloads, and recover quickly after a fault or breach.
