Compliance controls

Policies and technical checks used to meet legal and regulatory obligations.

Compliance controls are the policies, workflows, and technical checks a system uses to meet legal and regulatory obligations. They can include identity verification, access restrictions, transaction screening, logging, retention rules, and approval steps. In security programs, these controls are not just paperwork: they are enforced by software, configurations, and monitoring systems.

They matter because weak or inconsistent controls can create legal exposure, enable fraud, and make investigations harder. In cyber security, compliance controls often show up as audit trails, account governance, payment traceability, and policy enforcement across systems. Attackers may try to bypass them by using stolen identities, automated account creation, or payment abuse, while defenders rely on them to prove who did what, detect abnormal behavior, and reduce risk. When controls are well designed, they support both security and accountability.
