Comodato

Loan-for-use model where devices are provided temporarily rather than permanently.

Comodato is a loan-for-use arrangement in which an organization provides a device temporarily, while ownership stays with the lender. In cyber security, this model is common for laptops, tablets, and other managed endpoints that users need for a limited period, such as a school year or a project assignment. The important distinction is that the device is not a permanent asset of the user or recipient.

This matters because temporary custody changes how security is managed. The lender or administrator still needs inventory tracking, return procedures, patching, account deprovisioning, and data-wipe controls when the device comes back. In real environments, comodato devices can increase risk if users share accounts, store sensitive data locally, or lose the device without a clear response process. Used well, the model supports controlled distribution of hardware; used poorly, it creates unmanaged endpoints and weakens access control.
