Commerce automation is technology that handles parts of the buying journey with limited human intervention. It can include automated product search, account creation, cart building, checkout, payment routing, and post-purchase support. In modern retail, these systems are often powered by APIs, bots, rules engines, and increasingly AI agents.
This matters in cyber security because every automated step becomes a machine-readable workflow that can be probed, copied, or abused at scale. Attackers use commerce automation for credential stuffing, fake sign-ups, inventory hoarding, card testing, and rapid fraud attempts that mimic normal customer behavior. Defenders respond with bot detection, rate limiting, device and session analysis, step-up authentication, and fraud scoring to distinguish legitimate automation from malicious traffic. The security challenge is to preserve speed and convenience without letting automation become an easy path for abuse.
