Command API

An application interface used to issue management or control actions to software.

A Command API is a software interface used to send management or control actions to an application, device, or service. Instead of exposing a full user interface, it offers programmatic commands such as start, stop, configure, query status, or trigger notifications. In industrial and administrative tools, these endpoints often sit close to privileged functions, so they must enforce strong authentication and authorization.

In cyber security, Command APIs matter because they are attractive attack surfaces. If an attacker can reach a command endpoint without proper checks, they may change settings, disrupt operations, or abuse features such as alerting and remote control. Defenders reduce this risk by limiting network exposure, validating caller identity and permissions, logging command use, and disabling unused management functions. A well-protected Command API is a convenience layer; a weak one can become a direct path to control the system.
