Collaborative editing

Multiple users working on the same document or spreadsheet in near real time.

Collaborative editing is the ability for multiple users to work on the same document or spreadsheet at nearly the same time, with changes syncing continuously across devices. In modern cloud suites, this often includes live cursors, comments, version history, and automatic conflict resolution.

From a security perspective, collaborative editing expands the attack surface. It relies on user identity, sharing permissions, browser sessions, and the syncing layer, so a stolen password or a misconfigured share link can expose sensitive content instantly. Attackers may abuse invitation emails, malicious shared files, or overbroad edit rights to insert content, steal data, or spread phishing inside trusted workspaces. Defenders look for strong authentication, least-privilege sharing, access reviews, audit logs, and secure endpoint hygiene. In privacy-focused services, collaborative editing is especially important because it must preserve real-time teamwork without leaking plaintext to the provider or weakening encryption controls.
