Cognitive artifacts

Traces that may suggest AI integration, such as prompts or provider references.

Cognitive artifacts are machine-readable traces that suggest a system or sample is using artificial intelligence. In malware analysis, they can include embedded prompts, model instructions, provider names, API endpoints, or other strings that point to AI services. These clues often appear in code comments, configuration files, metadata, or support scripts rather than in the main payload.

They matter because they give defenders a way to hunt for AI-integrated malware before full execution or reverse engineering. Analysts can use these artifacts to cluster related samples, map shared infrastructure, and spot patterns in attack tooling. However, a single artifact is not proof of malicious AI use: strings can be reused, copied, or added as noise. Good defense treats cognitive artifacts as leads that must be validated with broader context, such as file relationships, network indicators, and behavior.
