A code repository is a managed store for source code, build files, configuration, and related development assets. It may live on a local workstation or in a hosted platform such as a Git service. Repositories help teams version changes, review edits, and coordinate software development.
In security, repositories are high-value targets because they often contain more than code: commit history, branch metadata, infrastructure scripts, API keys, and paths to internal systems. Attackers may steal repository contents directly, harvest credentials from exposed files, or use repository context gathered from another infected endpoint to understand how an environment is built. Defenders reduce this risk with least-privilege access, secret scanning, signed commits, strong authentication, and rapid rotation of any token or credential that may have been exposed.
