Code comment

Non-executable text in source code meant for humans, not for the program at runtime.

A code comment is non-executable text embedded in source code for human readers. Compilers and interpreters ignore it at runtime, so it does not change how the program behaves. Comments are used to explain logic, mark TODO items, document configuration, or temporarily disable code during development.

In cybersecurity, comments matter because they can carry sensitive or deceptive content even when they are not part of the payload. Attackers may hide hints, credentials, or misleading instructions in comments to confuse reviewers, static analysis tools, or AI-assisted malware triage systems. This creates an analysis-layer risk: the code may run normally while the comment tries to influence what a defender believes about it. Security teams should treat comments as untrusted input, especially when files are summarized by models or parsed automatically. Comparing comments with actual execution paths helps separate harmless annotations from text that is meant to mislead.
