CloudWatch metrics

Operational measurements used to track activity, latency, errors, and usage trends in AWS services.

CloudWatch metrics are AWS time-series measurements that record how a service is behaving over time. They can show counts, rates, latency, errors, CPU use, request volume, or custom business signals. Teams use them to build dashboards, trigger alarms, and compare current behavior against normal baselines.

In cyber security, CloudWatch metrics are useful because many attacks and failures first appear as unusual patterns: sudden spikes in API calls, repeated authentication errors, runaway retries, unexpected data transfer, or a workload that keeps consuming resources. Defenders can alert on these trends to spot abuse, misconfiguration, or compromised automation before costs or impact grow. Attackers may also try to stay below alert thresholds, so good monitoring combines metrics with logs, tagging, and alert review. On AWS, CloudWatch metrics are often part of the control plane that turns raw activity into actionable detection.
