Cloud relay

A remote management path that routes traffic through a vendor service so devices can be reached over the internet.

A cloud relay is a vendor-managed remote access path that forwards traffic through the provider’s service so an internet-connected device can be reached without being directly exposed. Instead of opening a port to the device, the camera, recorder, or gateway maintains an outbound connection to the cloud, and remote administrators connect back through that relay.

Cloud relay matters because it changes the trust boundary. It can simplify remote maintenance, but it also creates an indirect path into devices that defenders may overlook during hardening. If credentials are weak, accounts are reused, or the vendor service is abused, attackers may reach management functions even when direct access seems blocked. In real attacks, cloud relay features can be probed, hijacked, or combined with other flaws to preserve access and move around network controls. Defenders should treat these services as privileged access channels: inventory them, restrict who can use them, enforce strong authentication, and review logs for unexpected remote sessions.
