Cloud provider

A company that delivers computing, storage, and platform services over shared infrastructure.

A cloud provider is a company that offers computing, storage, networking, and platform services over shared infrastructure. Instead of owning their own servers, organizations rent capacity and manage workloads through the provider’s control plane, APIs, and consoles. That makes the provider part of the system’s trust boundary, not just a vendor.

In cyber security, cloud providers matter because they concentrate access, identity, logging, and data in one place. Misconfigurations, stolen credentials, weak key management, or exposed storage can create large-scale risk quickly. Defenders rely on provider features such as multi-factor authentication, audit logs, encryption, segmentation, and backup tools, but they must also plan for outages, jurisdiction issues, and dependency on a single platform. In real attacks, cloud providers are often the target or the leverage point because compromise there can affect many customers at once.
