A cloud-based path is a route through cloud-hosted infrastructure that can be reached from the internet or from connected services. It may be a web console, API endpoint, database gateway, identity service, or admin interface exposed through a cloud platform.
In cyber security, this matters because reachable cloud paths are often the first place attackers look for weak authentication, default credentials, misconfigured access controls, or overly broad network rules. If a sensitive system is exposed through such a path, an attacker may not need an exploit; a valid login, leaked token, or permissive firewall rule can be enough. Defenders reduce this risk by inventorying exposed services, restricting access to trusted networks, using multi-factor authentication, rotating credentials, and applying least privilege. Monitoring logs for unusual access patterns is also important, because cloud-based paths can be abused quietly before data is stolen or altered.
