A closed system is a deployment model where the AI model stays on the provider’s infrastructure and users access it only through a controlled interface, such as a web app or API. The model weights are not distributed to customers, so the provider keeps direct control over updates, logging, access limits, and safety filters.
In cyber security, this design matters because it preserves a central enforcement point. A provider can monitor abuse, block suspicious traffic, rotate credentials, and patch defenses without relying on every customer environment. It also reduces the chance that an attacker can copy the model and remove safeguards offline. However, closed systems are still exposed to risks like account takeover, API key theft, prompt injection, data leakage, and abuse of high-volume requests. Defenders treat closed systems as a way to narrow the attack surface, not eliminate it.
