Climate neutrality

a state in which remaining greenhouse gas emissions are balanced by removal or offsetting.

Climate neutrality is the state in which an organization, city, or country balances its remaining greenhouse gas emissions with removals or offsets. In practice, it depends on accurate emissions accounting, reliable data pipelines, and clear governance over how targets are measured and reported. The term matters in cyber security because climate programs increasingly rely on digital systems that collect energy data, track projects, and coordinate across departments and partners.

These systems create attack surfaces. If an attacker alters emissions records, disrupts reporting platforms, or steals planning data, the result may be bad decisions, compliance failures, or loss of trust in climate claims. Defenders therefore treat integrity, access control, backups, and audit logs as part of climate operations, not just IT hygiene. In real organizations, climate neutrality is achieved not only by cutting emissions, but by protecting the data and coordination needed to prove those cuts are real.
