Client-side filtering

Decisions made on the user device about what content to load, show, or suppress.

Client-side filtering is when a user’s device, such as a browser or app, decides what content to load, display, or hide. The rules run locally instead of on the website, so the client becomes the gatekeeper for requests, page elements, and embedded resources.

This matters in cyber security because client-side controls can block ads, trackers, malicious scripts, and known phishing resources before they reach the screen. They can also reduce exposure to third-party content and improve privacy. At the same time, filtering on the client can be bypassed or manipulated by attackers through content changes, script delivery tricks, or filter-detection logic. Defenders use client-side filtering in browsers, secure email clients, and endpoint tools, but its effectiveness depends on how the rules are implemented and updated.
