Claimed attack

an allegation that still needs independent verification.

A claimed attack is an allegation that a cyber incident occurred, but it has not yet been independently verified. The claim may come from a threat actor, a public leak site, a social post, or a third party, and it can mention a target, a hash, screenshots, or other details. None of that is proof on its own.

In cyber security, this term matters because unverified claims can create urgency before evidence is checked. Defenders should compare the allegation with logs, alerts, endpoint telemetry, access records, and recent configuration changes to determine whether compromise actually happened. In real operations, claimed attacks are common in ransomware and extortion campaigns, where public claims may be used to pressure victims, generate attention, or exaggerate impact. Treat the claim as a signal to investigate, not as confirmation of breach, encryption, or data theft.
