CI metadata

configuration and operational details from continuous integration systems.

CI metadata is the configuration and operational detail produced by continuous integration systems. It can include pipeline names, job definitions, runner labels, environment variables, build targets, artifact names, and status logs. While it is not usually the source code itself, it often reveals how software is built, tested, and deployed.

In cyber security, CI metadata matters because it can expose useful reconnaissance data to attackers. If a malicious package, extension, or script can read this information, it may learn internal project structure, service names, deployment patterns, or secrets handling practices. Defenders treat CI metadata as part of the attack surface: they restrict access, minimize what build systems expose, rotate sensitive variables, and review unexpected CI-related collection in malware or supply-chain attacks. Even small leaks can help an intruder move from curiosity to targeted compromise.
