Channel incentives are the sales pressures, discounts, bonuses, and other rewards that shape how distributors, resellers, and partners behave. In technology supply chains, these incentives can encourage honest competition, but they can also push partners to prioritize volume and margin over product authenticity, documentation, or policy compliance.
In cyber security, channel incentives matter because they influence whether genuine hardware, consumables, or software licenses stay inside approved distribution paths. Poorly designed incentives can make counterfeit goods, gray-market imports, or unauthorized substitutions more likely to reach customers. That creates operational risk, weakens trust in the supply chain, and can complicate incident response when a device misbehaves. Defenders reduce this risk with approved sourcing, vendor verification, reseller oversight, serial-number and authenticity checks, and contract terms that align sales behavior with security and quality requirements.
