Change request

a formal workflow used to request and approve modifications to security policy or infrastructure.

A change request is a formal workflow for proposing, reviewing, approving, and documenting a modification to security policy or infrastructure. In cyber security, it is used for actions such as opening a firewall rule, changing access control, updating VPN settings, or altering cloud security groups.

Change requests matter because every configuration change can create new exposure. A good workflow records who asked for the change, why it is needed, what risk it introduces, and who approved it. That audit trail helps defenders prevent unauthorized access, reduce rule sprawl, and prove that controls were reviewed before deployment. In real operations, attackers sometimes benefit from rushed or undocumented changes, while defenders use change management tools to validate impact, enforce segregation of duties, and compare the approved intent with the live configuration. In complex environments, the change request is often the main control that keeps security policy aligned with what the network actually allows.
