A certification program is a structured assessment process that checks whether a service, product, or organization meets defined security or compliance criteria. It usually follows documented controls, evidence collection, testing, and an independent review before a certificate or label is issued.
In cyber security, certification programs matter because they help buyers compare providers and verify claims about data handling, access control, resilience, and regulatory alignment. They are common in cloud and managed-service procurement, where a badge can signal that a provider has passed an audit. Defenders use them to reduce risk and support compliance, but they are not a substitute for continuous monitoring: attackers often benefit when teams trust certifications without checking the exact scope, exclusions, or expiry of the assessment.
