A CDMO is a contract development and manufacturing organization: a company that helps other firms design, develop, and produce specialized products. In healthcare, biotech, and other regulated industries, a CDMO may handle sensitive formulas, research data, production schedules, quality records, and partner integrations.
CDMOs matter in cyber security because attackers value the concentration of intellectual property and the operational dependency on these services. A breach can affect not just one company, but multiple clients, suppliers, and downstream manufacturing or distribution workflows. In ransomware cases, a public victim listing may target a CDMO to create pressure, disrupt production, or threaten confidentiality. Defenders should protect privileged access, segment production and corporate networks, monitor third-party connections, and verify backups and recovery procedures. Strong logging and vendor risk management are especially important where partner data and regulated processes are involved.
