Carbon offset

A mechanism used to balance emissions by funding equivalent reduction projects.

A carbon offset is a mechanism for balancing greenhouse-gas emissions by funding projects that reduce or remove an equivalent amount of carbon elsewhere, such as reforestation or renewable energy. In consumer products and utility services, offset claims often appear alongside “green” tariffs, emission reports, and sustainability dashboards.

In cyber security, carbon offset programs matter because the claim is only as trustworthy as the data and systems behind it. Attackers may try to alter emissions records, forge certificates, impersonate vendors, or exploit weak portals to make fake offset purchases look legitimate. Defenses include strong identity checks, signed records, audit trails, immutable logs, and third-party validation of offset sources. For digital businesses, the goal is not just to market a low-carbon offer, but to prove that the underlying accounting and customer workflows cannot be quietly manipulated.
