Calc is LibreOffice’s spreadsheet application. It is used to create, edit, and open workbooks, tables, formulas, charts, and imported data. Like other office tools, Calc does more than display cells: it parses complex file formats and can process linked content, embedded objects, and other document logic.
That complexity matters in cyber security because a crafted spreadsheet can abuse parsing bugs or dangerous features to trigger a crash, data leak, or even arbitrary code execution when a user opens the file. In real attacks, spreadsheet files are often used as delivery vehicles because they look routine and are trusted by users. Defenders reduce the risk by patching LibreOffice quickly, limiting features such as external links or macros when they are not needed, and opening suspicious files in sandboxed or isolated environments. Monitoring for unusual child processes launched by the office suite can also help spot abuse.
