CAE stands for computer-aided engineering, a class of tools used to simulate, analyze, and validate designs before they are built. In mechanical engineering, CAE often works alongside CAD and PLM systems to support tasks such as stress analysis, thermal modeling, fluid dynamics, and design optimization.
From a cyber security perspective, CAE environments matter because they often contain valuable intellectual property, proprietary models, and tightly connected workflows. Attackers may target CAE platforms through stolen credentials, exposed remote services, compromised integrations, or ransomware, then use that access to steal design files or disrupt engineering operations. Defenders should protect CAE systems with strong authentication, access control, segmentation, logging, and reliable backups, especially when the tools connect to shared storage, identity systems, or third-party services.
