Cache storage

A browser-side storage layer that can retain web responses associated with a site’s origin.

Cache storage is a browser-side data layer that stores web responses tied to a site’s origin. It is designed to improve performance by letting the browser reuse previously fetched resources, such as scripts, images, or API responses, without downloading them again. Because the contents are associated with normal web activity, cache entries can blend in with legitimate site data.

In security work, cache storage matters because attackers can abuse this trust relationship. Malicious content may be pre-staged in cache, disguised as an ordinary asset like a PNG, or used to support a follow-on payload delivery flow. This can reduce visibility for network filters and make incident response harder if analysts focus only on obvious files on disk. Defenders should inspect browser artifacts, compare cached objects with expected site behavior, and look for suspicious origin-bound responses, unusual MIME types, or content that does not match its filename or purpose.
