Business Architecture

The discipline of defining business capabilities, value streams, and structures before choosing systems or org charts.

Business architecture is the discipline of mapping what an organization does before deciding how it will do it. It defines business capabilities, value streams, decision rights, and operating structures, then uses that model to guide systems, teams, and governance. In other words, it starts with the business problem, not the software stack or org chart.

In cyber security, business architecture matters because controls work best when they fit real business capabilities. If teams centralize logging, identity, or help desk functions without understanding who owns which process, attackers can exploit gaps in responsibility, duplicate tools, or inconsistent workflows. A strong business architecture helps defenders place security controls where risk is highest, standardize shared services, and separate sensitive capabilities from broadly shared ones. It also supports safer ERP consolidation, cloud governance, and M&A integration by showing which functions must stay local and which can be centralized for scale and consistency.
