Bulk query

A large-scale request for records that can signal unusual data access.

A bulk query is a large-scale request for many records at once, often across a database, archive, or case-management system. In normal operations, bulk queries may be used for reporting, audits, migrations, or legal review. In security contexts, however, the same pattern can indicate unusual data access, especially when a user account or application asks for far more records than it typically needs.

Bulk queries matter because they can quickly expose sensitive information if an attacker has stolen credentials or compromised an internal system. A single successful query can pull thousands of files, identities, or case records, turning a limited breach into a large data loss event. Defenders look for signs such as unusual query volume, repeated exports, odd search patterns, and access outside expected hours. Monitoring, least-privilege access, and alerting on mass retrieval are common controls used to detect or slow this kind of activity.
