Bulk lookup

Large-scale querying of a database, often a warning sign in breach investigations.

Bulk lookup is the large-scale querying of a database, usually by running many searches or extracting many records in a short time. In a normal system, lookups are small and targeted: one customer, one case, one address. Bulk lookup changes that pattern and can signal that someone is collecting data rather than using it for a single legitimate task.

In cyber security, bulk lookups matter because they are often a clue that an account, API key, or internal tool is being abused. Attackers may use them to enumerate identities, verify stolen data, or build a complete dataset for fraud, phishing, or correlation across services. Defenders watch for unusual query volume, repeated access to sensitive fields, and large exports from registry or business systems. In an identity registry, bulk lookups are especially concerning because even non-secret data can become dangerous when combined at scale.
