Building automation is the collection of control systems that manage facility functions such as HVAC, lighting, alarms, access control, and environmental monitoring. In data centers and other critical sites, these systems help keep temperature, humidity, airflow, and power-related conditions within safe limits for equipment and people.
From a cyber-security perspective, building automation matters because it sits at the boundary between IT and physical operations. If control networks are exposed or poorly segmented, an attacker may not need to “break” the main business systems to cause damage; reaching a building controller can be enough to disrupt cooling, change environmental settings, or reduce resilience. Defenses focus on asset inventory, network segmentation, strong authentication, restricted remote access, and careful monitoring of any system that can influence facility behavior.
