Build platform

The surface where a print begins and where adhesion is managed.

A build platform is the surface where a 3D print starts. It holds the first layer in place long enough for the part to form, so its condition strongly affects adhesion, accuracy, and whether the job succeeds. Material, temperature, cleanliness, and leveling all matter: residue or wear can make a print release too early, stick too hard, or fail outright.

In cyber security, the build platform matters because it is part of the trusted production chain. If a printer is used to make enclosures, fixtures, or hardware prototypes, a compromised or poorly controlled platform can introduce defects that are hard to notice later. Defenders reduce this risk with repeatable cleaning, documented setup, access control to shared printers, and inspection of the first layer. Attackers may exploit weak process control by changing surface prep, bed settings, or materials to cause failures, delays, or subtle manufacturing errors.
