Build

a specific compiled state of Windows used to identify a system version.

A build is a specific compiled state of Windows. It identifies the exact software image running on a system, often more precisely than the marketing version number. Two devices can both say “Windows 11 25H2,” yet still differ in build number, installed fixes, or enabled components.

Builds matter in cyber security because many vulnerabilities, protections, and compatibility issues depend on the exact system state. Attackers use build information to fingerprint targets, choose exploits that match a known weakness, or avoid systems that are already patched. Defenders use build numbers for asset inventory, patch validation, and exposure checks, since the version label alone may hide important differences. In practice, “what build is this?” is one of the fastest ways to confirm whether a machine is likely affected by a specific advisory or hardening change.
