Browser-stored credentials

Passwords and login data saved by web browsers, which can be valuable to infostealers after initial access.

Browser-stored credentials are usernames, passwords, autofill entries, and sometimes related session data that a web browser saves for convenience. They help users sign in faster, but they also create a high-value target on the endpoint. If an attacker gains initial access through phishing, malware, or a malicious browser extension, these saved secrets can often be collected from the browser profile and used for account takeover.

In cyber attacks, infostealers commonly search browsers for saved logins because they provide immediate access to email, cloud services, social platforms, and financial accounts. Defenders treat browser-stored credentials as sensitive data: they reduce exposure by using a password manager with strong master protection, enforcing multi-factor authentication, restricting local admin rights, and monitoring for suspicious browser profile access or credential-dumping behavior. On shared or managed systems, disabling password saving can also lower risk.
