Browser policy engine

A browser layer that applies rules about what content can load or execute.

A browser policy engine is the decision-making layer inside a browser that applies rules to web content before it loads or runs. Those rules can block ads, trackers, scripts, cookies, pop-ups, or other resources based on security and privacy policies.

In cyber security, this matters because the browser has become an enforcement point, not just a renderer. A policy engine can reduce exposure to malicious ads, drive-by downloads, and tracking infrastructure, and it can also enforce enterprise controls such as content filtering or site restrictions. At the same time, overly strict rules can break legitimate web apps that depend on third-party scripts or embedded services. Attackers may try to evade or abuse these rules by hiding payloads in allowed content, relying on trusted domains, or fingerprinting which resources are blocked. Defenders use policy engines to shrink the attack surface and make browser behavior more predictable.
