Browser-based office software

productivity tools that run through a web browser instead of a desktop app.

Browser-based office software is a productivity suite that runs inside a web browser instead of as a locally installed desktop application. Common functions include editing documents, spreadsheets, email, and file sharing through a server-backed web interface. Because the application is delivered centrally, administrators can update it quickly, enforce authentication rules, and connect it to identity, logging, and retention systems.

In cyber security, this model matters because it changes both the attack surface and the defense model. Centralized access can improve visibility and reduce endpoint sprawl, but it also concentrates risk in the browser session, cloud account, and web application itself. Attackers may target weak passwords, stolen session cookies, malicious extensions, phishing pages, or misconfigured sharing links to reach documents and accounts. Defenders use strong identity controls, MFA, browser hardening, access policies, and audit logging to reduce that exposure. For secure environments, browser-based office software is often evaluated for whether it can preserve control, traceability, and workflow integrity without forcing unsafe workarounds.
