Bounded workflow

A process with a clear scope, start point, and end point that is easier to automate safely.

A bounded workflow is a process with a clear scope, defined start and end points, and known inputs and outputs. Because the steps are limited and repeatable, it is easier to automate, test, and monitor safely than an open-ended process.

In cyber security, bounded workflows matter because they reduce ambiguity and make controls enforceable. Tasks such as user provisioning, log review, invoice approval, or alert triage can be wrapped in rules, validation, and logging when the workflow is well defined. That helps defenders add guardrails like approval gates, provenance checks, and rollback steps. In contrast, unbounded workflows invite error: a model or script may make assumptions, skip exceptions, or propagate bad data without a clear way to verify the result. Attackers also exploit poorly bounded processes by feeding malformed inputs, abusing exception paths, or confusing automated decision systems. A bounded workflow limits that blast radius and gives teams a better chance to detect, explain, and correct failures.
