Bossware

Workplace monitoring software that tracks employee activity, productivity, or behavior.

Bossware is workplace monitoring software that tracks employee activity, productivity, or behavior. It may record logins, keystrokes, screenshots, app usage, location, files opened, or time spent on tasks. In security terms, bossware is a form of high-volume telemetry collection: it gathers sensitive data about users and their devices, then turns that data into reports, alerts, or scores.

It matters because monitoring tools can become both a control and a risk. Defenders may use them for insider-risk detection, fraud investigation, policy enforcement, or audit logs. Attackers or abusive administrators can misuse the same visibility to harvest credentials, exfiltrate personal data, or quietly profile workers for retaliation or unfair discipline. If the tool is poorly secured, it can also expose sensitive records to outsiders. Good security practice means limiting what is collected, protecting the data at rest and in transit, logging access to the system, and preserving evidence so any decision based on the monitoring can be reviewed and challenged.
