Blockchain signaling

using ledger activity to carry indirect operational meaning.

Blockchain signaling is the use of ledger activity to carry indirect operational meaning. Instead of sending instructions through a normal command server, an attacker may encode messages in on-chain events such as transaction timing, addresses, amounts, token transfers, or metadata. Malware can then watch public blockchains and interpret those patterns as commands or lookup data.

This matters because public ledgers are easy to access, hard to fully block, and can blend into legitimate traffic. That makes takedowns and filtering more difficult than with traditional C2 infrastructure. In real attacks, blockchain signaling can help infected hosts discover payload locations, select an endpoint, or receive simple control instructions while avoiding obvious network beacons. Defenders look for unusual correlations between infection activity and specific ledger events, but the signals must be validated carefully to avoid false positives. The key security lesson is that shared infrastructure can be repurposed as a covert coordination channel.
