Blockchain-backed services are online services that rely on blockchain-based components for some part of their operation or access, such as addressing, hosting pointers, payment, or data publication. The blockchain itself is not a magic shield; the key security property is that the service may be harder to remove, alter, or censor than a single conventional server.
In cyber security, this matters because attackers can use such services to keep command, victim-contact, or leak infrastructure available even when defenders try to take it down. Ransomware groups may store references, negotiation paths, or publication triggers in decentralized systems to reduce dependence on one provider or domain. For defenders, that raises the cost of disruption and may require broader actions such as monitoring blockchain transactions, identifying related endpoints, and targeting the off-chain systems the service still depends on. The term describes resilience engineering for criminals, but it can also appear in legitimate systems that need durable, distributed access.
