Behavioral monitoring

The observation of usage and workflow signals to detect friction, drop-off, or unusual patterns.

Behavioral monitoring is the observation of usage and workflow signals to understand how people, devices, or applications normally operate. In cyber security, it turns logs, clicks, authentication events, network flows, and process activity into a baseline of “normal” behavior. When activity deviates from that baseline, the system can flag friction, drop-off, misuse, or unusual patterns for review.

This matters because many attacks do not start with obvious malware. Credential theft, insider abuse, account takeover, and living-off-the-land techniques often blend into ordinary activity. Behavioral monitoring helps defenders spot signs such as impossible travel, unusual login times, sudden privilege changes, mass file access, or repeated failed actions. It is commonly used in user and entity behavior analytics, endpoint detection, and fraud detection. To be useful, it must be tuned carefully to reduce false positives and should respect privacy, access controls, and retention limits.
