Behavioral design

Product choices that shape how people act, decide, and return.

Behavioral design is the practice of shaping product choices so they influence how people act, decide, and return. In digital products, this includes defaults, prompts, rewards, friction, and timing. Good security teams use behavioral design to make safe actions easier: clearer login flows, sensible notification limits, and confirmation steps for risky changes.

In cyber security, the same techniques can be abused. Phishing pages, scam apps, and dark patterns often push urgency, repetition, or habitual clicking to bypass careful thought. Attackers rely on predictable behavior, such as approving a request without reading it or reusing a password when prompted. Defenders study behavioral design to reduce these risks by adding pauses, warning messages, and well-placed controls that interrupt automatic responses and support safer decisions.
