Behavior-based assessment

selection methods that evaluate how a person acts in practice.

Behavior-based assessment is a selection or detection method that judges people, systems, or actions by what they actually do in practice, rather than by credentials, claims, or static profiles. In cyber security, this approach is used to evaluate user activity, device behavior, or candidate responses in realistic scenarios. The goal is to measure whether the observed conduct matches expected safe, reliable behavior.

This matters because many attacks hide behind legitimate-looking identities. Defenders use behavior-based assessment in tools such as user and entity behavior analytics, fraud monitoring, and incident response to spot unusual logins, privilege abuse, lateral movement, or malware-like activity. It is also useful in hiring for security roles, where practical exercises can reveal how someone handles alerts, pressure, and uncertainty better than a résumé can. Attackers, meanwhile, may try to imitate normal patterns to avoid detection, which is why behavior models must be continuously updated.
